You never know what you can do, til you do it

Erica recalls a special moment during recently attended event, and an important lesson to consider for anyone who is studying engineering — or trying to do something else that’s challenging!

You never know what you can do, til you do it!

I attended an award ceremony over the weekend with some very impressive people: people who have changed industries, started new companies, and done lots of other cool and important things.

We were all recipients of the Queen’s University Engineering Excellence 125th award (and I was very honoured to be among them!).

These were groundbreaking, game-changing people who graduated from engineering then designed water slides or started mining companies of MANY examples — not just technical stuff but philanthropy too.

By any measure, these are very successful people — and when they were asked ‘Who among you ever doubted you would graduate from engineering?’ at the dinner, nearly all of them raised their hand. (Yes, my hand was up too!).

The moral? Even the most successful people doubt themselves sometimes — and even if you’re doubting yourself RIGHT now, you can still recover and succeed and go out to make cool things happen.

So many people have done just that – why not you?

I’d love to hear how this resonates with you personally. Have you overcome doubts to achieve your goal?

How did you shift your mindset to get past an obstacle you weren’t sure you could overcome — or did you just keep going?
