To those who MAKE and MOVE things… we owe you!

Erica reflects on the essential services that are the only things moving during the current COVID 19 pandemic, and the importance of the people who perform them.

To those who MAKE and MOVE things… we owe you!!

Even before COVID-19 shut most of our systems down, we had a shortage of labour in industries like manufacturing.

Making stuff is cool! I can’t imagine a better way to start my career.

Yet (so I’m told) it’s hard to attract young people to choose manufacturing these days.

Maybe to them it doesn’t seem as cool as a working for a tech startup, or as prestigious as being a consultant.

But oh my goodness the people who make and move things are VITAL to our society!

You know who I am talking about: makers of the goods we depend on (especially masks and ventilators, but countless other things), tradespeople, truckers, retail workers, farmers and farm laborers, grocery store shelf-stockers, even janitors and house-cleaners… the list goes on.

It took a global pandemic and a moment of crisis for some of us to realize what heroes they are — despite our lack of recognition of the importance of our work.

Don’t they deserve just as much respect as the scientists or bankers among us?

I hope that from now on we can give these people the thanks that they always deserved.

Thank a MAKER or MOVER you know today!
